Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play the game?

Its a snap! Spin the spinner, roll the freeze dice, and pick up your spinner before it stops to get 1 point for each die, no matter how they land.  If you are good at spinning, then you can try to place each die in its signature freeze for an extra point.  Be sure to pick up the spinner before it stops or you get no points for the round.  Take turns, and battle your friends!

Why are they called Hope Figures?

Here's the story:

Mr. Joe taught Breaking (aka breakdancing) for 14 years as an artist in education.  He used to take any toy he could find and either try to make it spin or do a "freeze" (a pose in Breaking).  Nothing worked quite the way he hoped.

During the holidays of 2007,  Mr. Joe was given clay as a gift, and the first figurine he ever made spun like no toy before it.   It was an "Ah-Ha" moment!

Years were spent developing and refining the figures.  The process was challenging, but therapeutic.  Joe realized that he was experiencing something amazing.  While making each and every figurine, he just believed!  He believed in the possibilities for all of humanity.  He believed in his own potential, and he believed that these figurines were symbols or tokens of "all things good and possible. What you believe to be good and possible - so do they!"

Joe started to refer to his B=INGS as Hope Figures, as though they were the opposite of a worry stone.  He just kept dreaming and believing, and thought it so wonderful to have something that was always there to encourage a person to be hopeful.  It was simply meant to be and makes sense. Hope figures.

Where can we see more of these?

More social content to come, but for now, please follow us on Instagram to stay tuned!

What are the figurines made of?

Originally, these figurines are made from a polymer clay.  Great care is given to craft each one by hand.  Polymer clay bakes in an oven to harden, and then each one is skillfully sanded so that it can be optimized for spinning or balancing.

Once a Hope Figure is finished, it is 3D scanned so that it can be made in many various materials.  "How many ways can they be made?" is one of our guiding questions.

Currently, the figures are printed with PLA plastic, Resin, or Metal.  Effectively, those materials offer our good/better/best options.

Are there other ways to play?

The only limit is your imagination!  Stack them, use them with board games, make them characters and create stories, have spin contests, create an obstacle course - you get the picture!

How sturdy are they or how long will they last?

This depends.  We currently offer a good/better/best, but the best come at a premium price.  If you want nearly indestructible, precious metal, finely polished, and highly functional figurines - We've got them. Plastic is sturdy, affordable, and available in cool colors.  We like resin, but it is not as sturdy.  A variety of materials will be available oin the future, but PLA plastic is tghe standard. Please remember that each figure is a work of art!

Why are they called B=INGS

A B-girl or a B-boy is basically a person who commits to breaking as a lifestyle.  In thinking of a name for a Breaking toy, B-toy would have seemed like a good option, but if you are a "toy" in Hip Hop culture, that is not a good thing.  These figures have no gender, no face, and no race.  The only identity they possess is either what we project upon them or is because of what they can do.

So, B=INGS.  No gender there.  Equality is a concept that is present, and perhaps to 'be' is equal to doing (suffix INGS indicates actions).  Of course, B=INGS is pronounced "bee-ings."  One more thing, the "B" in Bgirl or Bboy can stand "break", as in the break in a record or a very danceable part of a song.  That also gives us the meaning of "to break is to do."  B=INGS.  Clever right?
